Pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere on Sunday urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to revisit the report of the El-Rufai Commitee on Restructuring.
The group said the recommendations should be revisited with the stage set by the National Assembly to review the constitution.
Rising from a meeting at the Lagos residence of its leader Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, Afenifere (Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba), commended Southwest governors for setting up the Amotekun security outfit to secure the region.
A minute’s silence in honour of former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Pa S.M Akindele and other victims of COVID-19 and #EndSARS protests.
A communique signed by Durojaiye and Secretary, Bayo Aina, called for the review of the El-Rufai panel.
The group said:”We call on leaders of the APC to commence a review of the report of the El-Rufai/Adetunmbi Committee on Restructuring, which was set up in 2007, with a view to presenting same for legislation in order to move the nation forward on the issue of the review of the 1999 Constitution. “
Afenifere sympathised with Lagosians and Southwest leaders, including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, whose personal properties were destroyed by hoodlums who hijacked the #EndSARS protests and the others whose means of livelihood may have been affected by the demonstrations.
The organisation reflected on the impact of the strange pestilence, hailing the courage, resourcefulness, resilience and coping capacity of Nigerians.
Afenifere also pondered on the recent protests, saying that police brutality, arbitrariness and gross abuse of power and privileges should end in the country.
The group applauded Southwest governors, particularly Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for their prompt and proactive steps in ensuring that the grievances of the protesters were communicated to appropriate quarters.
Afenifere said good governance should be the watchword in the Southwest, which bore a disproportionate brunt of the carnage.
The organisation saluted the courage and resilience of law enforcement officers who managed the opprobrium on their reputation by the activities of the bad eggs and restored law and order in a hostile environment.
The group also commended Southwest governors for setting up mechanism to assess the damages suffered by victims in the hands of SARS and rioters.
It added:”Human life is irreplaceable. Nonetheless, we suggest that families that lost loved ones be identified and every necessary step be taken, including monetary appeasement while those who suffered loss of properties be adequately compensated. Perhaps, this may hasten the healing process.”
