The six family members killed by gunmen in Osun State at the weekend, at Wasinmi village, Ikire, in Irewole Local Government of Osun State, were reportedly shot inside a mosque.
One person was injured.
Osun State Government yesterday confirmed the arrest of one suspect.
The Chairman, Committee on Peaceful Co-Existence between Fulani/Bororo and Crop Farmers in Osun State, Mr. Oguntola Toogun, disclosed this to The Nation.
Oguntola, who yesterday led the state government delegate to Ilorin in Kwara State for the burial of the victims, said that the three grandchildren were buried at the Muslim burial ground in Ilorin, while the grandfather and his two wives were buried beside the mosque on the estate owned by the grandfather.
He said: “The deceased are Alhaji Yaya Momodu (grandfather), Alhaja Adamo Yaya (wife), Alhaja Awawu Yaya (wife), Mumini Ibrahim, Mumini Abdulahi and Moriamo Ibrahim (grandchildren).
“The Emir of Ilorin was represented at the burial that took place on the estate owned by Alhaji Momodu, opposite Air Force School, near International Airport, Ilorin.
“They appreciated Osun State Government on the way we handled the matter. We told them that the act was not ethnic related, but a criminal act. We don’t have problem with the Fulani. Three of the grandchildren were buried at the Muslim burial ground in Ilorin.
“The Baba and his two wives were buried beside each other. They were buried in the mosque he (grandfather) built on the estate. The grandfather had built a house on the estate for him to relocate to Ilorin and leave his children in Osun State.
“The injured son is in a stable condition and Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has supported the victim.
“One person has been arrested in connection with the crime. Security operatives are in the area to arrest suspects.”
Oguntola, speaking on a private radio station in Osogbo, Rave FM, during a Yoruba talk show, Oro Oselu (Politics Talk), said the gunmen carried out the dastardly act around 10:30pm last Saturday.
Said he: “The gunmen dragged the grandfather, his two wives and four grandchildren out of their house. They were later taken to a mosque and shot. One of the four grandchildren survived, but he was injured.
“The grandfather was helpful to the government in resolving problems and exposing criminals.”
Osun State Command spokesperson Mrs. Yemisi Opalola said the police would intensify efforts to arrest the suspects.
