Man challenges alleged illegal arrest, detention in court

A company worker, Kingsley Chukwuma has slammed a N2 million suit on the police authorities at a Lagos High Court over his alleged arrest, harassment, and illegal detention.

Chukwuma is claiming the sum as compensation for the violation of his fundamental human rights as a result of his arrest and detention by men of FESTAC Police Division, Lagos.

He is also seeking an order restraining the respondents including the Police Service Commission, Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police, the Divisional Police Officer, FESTAC Command from harassing, restricting, molesting, or any of inhuman treatment against the applicant

In an affidavit, he deposed to in the suit with number 547832020, the claimant averred that he was arrested by men of the FESTAC Division  on October 12, 2020, at the instance of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Haruna Abiola, A Chief Superintendent of Police (DPO).

Chukwuma, who was a Personal Assistant to the owner of the company was arrested by men of the division in order to recover N5m debt paid into the company’s account.

He stated that his arrest and subsequent detention in lieu of under the purported investigation, when he is not the director or alter ego of the company, was unlawful, unjust, unconstitutional, and breach of right for the human dignity of human person.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.
