The United States of America has warned its citizens to avoid protest areas in Nigeria and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
The US Mission in Nigeria also said it had closed its consulate in Lagos for Tuesday and Wednesday , following the 24 – hour curfew imposed by the Lagos State Government.
The US Embassy in a travel warning published on its website , on Tuesday , observed that most demonstrations had been peaceful , but added that some had become violent , leading to the shutdown of major roads and bridges .
It stated , “ Multiple demonstrations are ongoing across Nigeria – to include areas within the consular districts of Abuja and Lagos. Although most demonstrations are peaceful , some have become violent and have shut down major thoroughfares and bridges .
“ Some police stations have been targeted . Lagos State closed all schools indefinitely as of October 19 due to protests and implemented a 24 – hour curfew starting at 4 pm on October 20 .
“ Consulate General Lagos is closed for the rest of today (Tuesday ) and tomorrow (Wednesday ).
