In a recent interaction with some Imolites, they sought the Governor Hope Uzodimma’s plan towards addressing the power challenges in the state as improved electrical power would greatly impact on the ease of doing business and increase economic activities within the state.
In a different discussion, some other person advised that businesses solely dependent on power shouldn’t be ventured into in the state because of the epileptic power situation in the state.
Since the creation of Imo state in 1973, the energy supply was dependent on a single 132KV line from Ala-Oji in Abia State to Egbu Owerri transmission station. This 132kv station through 33kv lines transverse from Owerri via Nwaorieubi, Mgbidi, Omuma, Amaifeke and the whole of Ideato nation. While on the other side of the same station another 33kv line take off from the same Egbu to the entire Owerri and Okigwe zone thereby making power supply availability in the whole state epileptic and grossly inadequate.
This ugly situation was instituted by gross negligence of previous administrations, either by not being truthful to themselves or lack of understanding of the fact that the old town of Owerri and Imo state at large is now a cosmopolitan state with a population growth in geometric proportion, hence an increase in energy consumption.
This epileptic state of the power sector has greatly affected the economic growth in the state. Industries struggling to survive, prospective investor finding it difficult to make an investment decision as a result of the epileptic energy supply, SMEs struggling to break even and business gestation period elongating because of high energy cost.
But, fear not for succor has come our way!
Uzodimma through his shared prosperity government anchored on the 3R’s mantra of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Recovery has activated work on the 330KV double circuit line from Alaoji to Owerri which is currently ongoing. Also another 330kv line is coming from Onitsha through Ihiala to Owerri while 132kv line takes off from Ihiala to Orlu.
The contractor on 132kv line from Mbalano to Okigwe and Ideato has already mobilized to site.
As preliminary as the progress is, Imolites can testify to the increase in power supply as currently experienced. The realization of this energy supply plan which cut across the entire state will guarantee improved access to power for all Imolites and it will lead to Improved economic growth- creating more enabling and fertile ground for prospective investors.
The Shared Prosperity administration of Governor Uzodimma (Onwa) is illuminating the state with every developmental project that would reposition the state to an enviable enterprise.
