The World Health Organization, (WHO), and the Federal Government have jointly pledged to support Katsina-based Hearing/Education Agency: Suleiman Hearing and Educational Foundation, to boost its efforts in tackling hearing ailments amongst Nigerians.
The two bodies made the pledge in Katsina at a symposium on the State of Ear and Hearing Care in Katsina State and Launching of World report on the hearing, organized by SHEF at the conference hall of Federal Medical Centre.
Suleiman Hearing and Educational Foundation, a non-governmental organization was established 13 years ago to provide hearing ability to Nigerians living with hearing disability and the educationally less privileged.
More than 3000 Nigerians in North West were said to have received free hearing screening, hearing aids and surgeries through partnership with the agency and the Katsina State Government.
The Representative of WHO, in Katsina State, Dr Zeenat Asmau in her speech at the occasion, declared that the foundation deserves all the needed support to fast track the implementation of its vision for better Nigerians
She said ”it’s a welcome development, and we are ready to give whatever support to the organization.”
The Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Center, FMC, Dr Suleiman Bello Muhammad said it will be out of place to see the foundation operating in an isolation hence the Federal Government through the hospital is ready to join hands to create an enabling environment for the Agency to operate.
He said “We will soon borrow a leaf from this foundation to bring our awareness on some diseases to the people.”
In a welcome address, an Executive Director of the Agency, Engineer Maimaje Ibrahim Abdullah noted the urgent need for the provision of trained professionals in all health care centers across Katsina State.
He further appealed to the Katsina state government to lead in the implementation of the National Policy and Strategic Plan on Ear and Hearing Care for effective health care services.
Katsina State Commissioner of Health, Engineer Yakubu Nuhu Danja, commended the foundation for the initiative and promised to collaborate with relevant bodies to implement all the necessary recommendations made at the event.
